Auxillary Air Valve

I am,so far,the happy and recent owner of a '73 1800ES. Looking for advice on repairs/replacement of the auxillary air valve/slide. This is the device on the right front corner of the head with hoses that connect to the intake manifold.
Mine is frozen and nonfunctional. I have tested it with a heat source. I have a rubber plug in place to block air flow and so far the engine seems to run fairly well. I have looked up replacements and they seem grossly expensive.
Any one had experience with these?
Thanks
