Surging glow from battery light. 200

My '88 245 has been exhibiting a strange symptom lately. Sometimes, but not all the time, the battery light will glow with surging intensity. It is a rhythmic pulsation that is road speed dependent. Repeat, road speed dependent. It can happen in dry or wet weather. Temperature has no assignable role to play.

The car is an automatic. I assume it has something to do with the speedo circuit, but how the problem makes its way to the battery light befuddles me.

Has anyone else ever seen this phenomenon?
