94 940 turbo head gasket replacement 900 1994

Blew the head gasket on my 940 turbo. Had the head milled. A mechanic friend of mine told me to close each vavle and put a little oil in the port and see if the valvle closed fully. One port seems to leak oil. It has a little rust on it and I would guess that might hold the valve open slightly. Is there a common way to clean the valve without taking the head apart? I don't want to scratch it up or damage it in any way. I would like to test the valve without having to take the head completely apart.
