Dash light and gear indicator light are opposite on my dimmer 700 1990

Howdy folks.

I posted about this a long time ago, but at the moment I'm reassembling my car after replacing the heater core.

I've replaced about 5 burned out lights, and discovered 2 things:

1) When I dim my dash lights, my gear indicator gets brighter. When I make my dash lights brighter, the gear indicator gets dimmer.

2) The prongs that make contact with the tiny 1.2W bulbs can get mushed. Pry them gently away from the sides (towards the middle) to fix issues of flickering lights.

So, as for 1), does anyone know why that would happen?

Cheers
