240 gl wagon heating up randomly 200

I have had several instances lately of my temp. needle climbing up to just under the red zone, then dropping down to 9:00 again. I replaced the thermostat, thinking it was not letting anything into the block. There was a small bit of rolled up gasket stuck in the spring (about the size of a dime) and I got all hopeful that I had solved the bigger part of the problems. Wrong, still doing the same thing, but less frequently. Some of the things I am seeing include;
!Milky brown under oil cap.
!Using/losing trans fluid and coolant.
!Water/coolant on top of distributor cap.
!Strange, constant whistle, like a tea kettle, for a few seconds. Not always hearing that though.
!Hiccup (like a backfire)at start up, in engine area, not out exhaust. Only occasionally.
!Only once did it leave a puddle of coolant under the car, seemed to be in the area of driver side, midway between firewall and radiator.
!Still runs fine, has decent power for a car with 225000 on it.
!Fan turns fine, tension on belts is good.
!Grayish sludge in overflow tank.
!Top radiator hose sometimes too hard to pinch, other times pliable.
So I am thinking that my water pump is trying to die, or my radiator has a leak inside of it? I think there is water getting into the oil somewhere, but where? If anyone wants to take a shot at this, in part or in whole, please post. Thanks in advance. I have not had to be on here for several years, but need help now.
