Rear Windscreen Wiper problem 900 1995

Dear jim2010,

Hope you're well. I do not own/operate a 960, so I waited to see if one of the Board's bonafide 960 experts would comment. As no one has, I'll try to help, relying on the parts diagram in Volvo VADIS, the superseded dealer parts/service database.

On 960s, a hex nut secures to the driveshaft, the rear window wiper arm. This hex nut is under a plastic cover. I believe this cover can be removed by gently prying "outwards" on it. Once you access the hex nut, remove it. You should then be able to remove the wiper arm, and reinstall it, so that the wiper blade is just above the bottom of the window. Once you've done so, replace the nut and tighten it. Then replace the plastic cover.

If the motor then turns, but the arm does not move, then the arm will have to be replaced. That is part #9159485; MSRP is about $60. Volvo wiper arms are designed with a soft metal bushing, into which the splined driveshaft is seated. If the arm is jammed, and the motor continues to term, the bushing is destroyed, but the wiper motor is protected against burn-out.

Hope this helps.

Yours faithfully,

Spook
