Alternator or Volt Reg? 200 1985

Would appreciate anyone's advice on the following. My voltage gauge goes to around 14 when I start my '85 244 than after a couple minutes it gradually (within about a minute) drops to around 10. I drove it home today for about 10 minutes at that reading and no instrument lights came on and when I turned off the engine it started right up. The Bosch volt reg and the battery are both new BUT the alternator is the original making it almost 30 years old and the car's got about 250K miles on it.
AutoZone's equipment said the reg was bad and the alternator was good but wanted to get some feedback from the Forum before replacing the reg. I wouldn't mind buying a new alternator as the original one has certainly served me well.
THANKS for your replies.
