R&R OD trans 140-160 1971

Clutch was slipping, so I put it up on stands, and removed the transmission. Although the books say remove OD and then bellhousing, mechanic I trust said separate tranny and OD from bellhousing. This works well as the top bellhousing bolts are a tough reach and all of them were way over torque tight. Got the items out fine with a bit of wiggling, etc.
Put in new clutch (the books don't mention the pilot bearing having a circlip, but this one does), but having trouble getting the shaft aligned right.
Doing this on my own, using jack and sneaking it up on wooden blocks. Thinking I have to get the driveshaft totally off to have shaft be more aligned with crank, but then it came out without this. BTYW- the rear u joint nuts are way hard to get free= the front ones were a bear too. Any clues?
Also wondering about separating OD & tranny.
Any tips on this?
Remember doing this on 122s back in the day, but was much younger and stronger then!
Thanks!
