This past Monday I went to the tear-a-part and found a nearly show room 245 with 137000 on it. I have never seen a car this clean other than on ebay. Paint was flawless, interior shined new, engine compartment was without a spec of dirt it seemed. Even the power steering rack was clean clean. I got there at closing time and couldn't get back until today. I attempted to buy it from the yard on tuesday, even calling the DMV for info, but the manager told me it would take $6000 cash to get it out. I planned to pull the engine, transmission, rear axle, ps rack ect... Everything I could get. The drivers seat was already gone.
I got there today ready to work and it had been crushed. It was a pretty heart breaking moment. Made me ill and pissed off all at the same time. Who throws away such a car and then who crushes it in a matter of a couple weeks being in the yard.
It makes me want to start a real business and recondition these cars. Really go through them full time and replace parts and bring them back to nearly new. I don't give it more than another 10 years and its going to be really hard to find a decent 240 at the rate they end up being crushed. I saw three amazing 240's get dropped off on one Saturday a few years ago in the bay area. No rust, nice paint. They are going quick. I think the price needs to go up on these models. A reconditioned 240 in top running order should be worth $6000 to the right buyer. If the resale value was at 6 I'd be up for reconditioning a few each year and have them on the road another 20 years. I'm talking rebuilt transmission, new brake everything, new suspension, sensors, relays, engine ect (idle control, fuel pressure, coil, alt, water pump, radiator). You know go through them and really just start new. There has to be a market out there.
