Oldyeller got it right. It is indeed the lower ball joint. I've ordered replacement ball joints an decided I will have the front struts replaced too as they have never been replaced. It is apparently a 5-6 hour job and you need spring compressors etc plus it's easier to do it on a hoist. I don't have either.
