hot air hose to air filter box- disconnect for life of the amm? 200

hi sages- posters here in the distant past advised to disconnect the hot air hose which moves exhaust pipe heated air into the air cleaner box and leave it off . the purpose as i recall was to save the sensitive amm from damage by the heated air. word is replacement amm is hard to find and cost will send buyer to cleaners or mortgage. wont disconnecting this hot air supply lead to cold running problems and stinko mpg? my tank is a 92 245. thanks tons oldduke
