NEED HELP WITH THIS ELECTRICAL ISSUE!!! 700 1990

My wife was driving home from work the other day (1990 740 GLE) and the car lost power and died. Her brother came and jumped her, she let it run for awhile and then drove home with no problem. The next day, I let it run for awhile before work and then when I put it in reverse and went to leave, the car sputtered and lost power. Could not restart it without a boost. My buddy took the battery in and they said it was fine. Then I removed the alternator and took it in and it tested fine after 3 tests. Now when I start the car, the red up arrow for the 4th gear override switch is on (even though it is not engaged) and the unstrument panel and all tools will work UNLESS i hit the switch and turn the arrow off (when all instruments will stop working). I don't have much money and I havent seen anyone with this exact problem and I'm having a real tough time figuring this out. PLEASE respond with any suggestions.
