blower motor hellaciousness stories on late 240s- why? 200

Just two more days and we would have voted you as the first of the year to start a string about the infamous blower motor replacement! Nonetheless, thanks for posting.

I've done the blower motors on both of my bricks ('79 264 with ~75K original miles, and a '84 245T with >176K miles) and on a friend's '86 244. Their replacement truly is hellacious, as you describe. My first one, on the (then)daughter's 245, resulted in a broken finger in early December cold weather. The subsequent repair waited to be finished when the finger mended and the weather warmed. If I had added up the hours of total work time, the first one probably took between 10-12 hours of work, including the time spent constantly referring to published instructions from the great people on this site.

The second and third instances were completed in 6 and finally a 4.5 hour increment, this time using knowledge and experience gained from the first one. My neighbor stopped by during my second one and remarked how it appeared the car had been "built around the blower motor, hung from a string"! I instantly, between curse words, agreed. I firmly believe that these many of these cars have far exceeded the anticipated life span the engineers envisioned. The bio-degradable wiring on the early-80s cars exemplifies this mindset.

If you are going to have this done, or plan to do it yourself, be sure to take the time to also inspect your heater core, as well as consider replacing the the resistor and switch while you are in there. Art B. has a great website (http://cleanflametrap.com/) which has been a great help to me. Good luck, ---rick
