Okay thanks, that's a good start and .018" is what I was thinking about trying if all else failed so we're on the same page there. I can do a visual on the head, that's easy. I'm not to sure about the other though, but I'll try to figure it out tommorrow.

I had two horizontal oil tanks installed in my basement's crawl space. End to end they measure about 8 feet each. That puts the far end of the rear tank back 16 feet and where the plumber decided would be a good place to put the oil level gauge.
Probably from the same school of engineering as the guys who stamp the cams.
