No heating - water pump? 900

Hello
Volvo 940 Regina '94. Out of the blue no heating this morning. Heater valve good (pulled out and tested), heater core OK ( air blows through with ease ). Cabin control operates the heater valve close/open, no problem. The blower motor runs as it should. No leaks, coolant looks good, replaced ( original Volvo ) with water pump ( HEPU ) 20 months ago. The system builds up the pressure.
In my view I am left with two options: water pump or thermostat. Can faulty water pump or thermostat give this kind of results? I like to know your opinion before I pull those out.
