The shocks used in Canada 1981 and later are gas filled. Made by Boge or Fichtel & Sachs.

"Do not weld near or on gas filled impact absorbers until they have been evacuated. The impact absorbers must always be evacuated before scrapping. Safety glasses must always be worn when evacuating the absorbers."

It goes on to show you where to drill the hole according to the year and manufacturer.
