Gas gauge stopped working 200 1991

The starter pooped out on the 240 last night in zero degree weather, tried to jump start it,rapped on the starter nothing. We towed it home and put a new starter on it I got. Starts right up,but for some reason the gas gauge,(which worked fine) stopped working and the needle is below the empty part of the scale. Could I have fried something either jumping it or when I shorted the starter. (got a little close the the hot post with my thunking rod). Is there a relay ? I have no wiring diagrams for the car and I checked the fuses.
