Overdrive questions

The OD is in a car which has been off the road for a number of years, but when last run it made a high pitched EEEEEEEEEEEE noise only when the OD was engaged which, while not loud, drove me crazy as I am sensitive to such noises. The tranny is out of the car now as I get ready to put the car on the road again so I am trying to figure out if there is anything I should do to it now while it is easily accesible. I have heard that an only-when-engaged noise like this can be expensive to fix so thought maybe I should be looking for a spare.

It is also just possible that it is an ordinary noise and I am just being oversensitive. The car is an MG, and has no sound proofing ( or windows for that matter). But don't really know what a healthy one should sound like.

Oh, I don't know what model it is other than M41 and D. Is it stamped on the tranny/OD somewhere?
