How to remove the strut assembly safely when the shock top nut has stripped out of the strut tube? 200 1993

I am in the unfortunate situation of discovering that the shock tube top nut of my front passenger side strut tube assembly has stripped out and is loose around the shock. This allows the shock body to slide freely in and out of the strut tube while driving. This also doesn't allow me to jack the car up because the shock no longer keeps the spring from completely uncompressing.

I am faced with the task of safely uncompressing the spring without the ability to remove the strut/shock/spring assembly as a unit and attaching spring compressors. I have also tried and failed to get spring compressors around the spring while still installed in the car.

Has anyone faced this situation? Is there a creative (and safe) way to uncompress the spring so I can replace my strut tube assembly?
