Override bars grommets 444-544

Howdy gang,

Since I'm running out of tweeks on my car, I decided to install the rubber grommets I purchased a few months back. I'm specifically referring to the round grommets that penetrate the trunk area. Here's the dilemma:
1. If I install them into the metal first, then try to push the chrome bar through the hole, it also pushes through.
2. If I install around the chrome bar first, then push them through the hole, I end up using a sharp instrument ( screw driver ) to try to may it seal, and possibly damage the grommet.

But I had an idea this morning.............has anyone used the same trick as a windshield installer uses with the rope? I am very open to suggestions!

Thanks,
