M40/41 Shifter Extension Differences

I saw what appears to be an M40 (no OD) with a shifter extension that is a separate piece from the trans cover - the two parts bolt together right at the tail end of the trans. The only extensions I'm familiar with are one piece with the trans cover.

Does anyone know what applications the two-piece was used on? Thanks.
