splash cover on rear disc brakes (solid axle) 900 1991

The splash/dust covers on the back axle of my 940 estate (1991 model, solid axle) are just about rusted away and I'm contemplating replacement. Information on what needs doing seems pretty sparse! Is this cover the same as the half shaft retaining plate - seems to be held by the same 4 bolts?

I would appreciate any advice on:
# whether replacement is really necessary/worthwhile?
# what needs doing to replace them if that's what is recommended. Any pitfalls to avoid etc?

Thanks,

OwenF
