Mr. McIntosh,
Please don't despair. Though collecting the transmission parts and pieces to convert your mighty Volvo 164, the mightiest of any Volvo ever, is possible.
You may want to search the brickboard for posting by our very dear George Downs. Mr. Down's brickboard.com handle is walrus3. Mr. Down's, by his posts, was among the most knowledgeable on the 164.
Innumerable treads exist on this very brickboard.com on the topic of converting the Volvo 164 to the M410. There may exist other articles converting to the M45/46, as well as other manual transmission makes and models.
The mighty Volvo 164 is a unique RWD Volvo. While in it, you may think it a better appointed 140/240 interior, yet spartan. The tractor engine inl;ine six B30 is well worthy of restoration.
Other than the B6304 in the 960/90 series, the 164 is the only other RWD Volvo model with I-6. The B30 is a torque-y beast. Well worth allowing this engine to push the torque and HP through a heart manual transmission to the rear wheels.
The Borg-Warner model 30 is a genuine slushbox and not very efficient.
I envy that you can broach such a 164 modification.
There does exist other Volvo 164 specific sites in the U.S., the UK, and in Europa. You may find info on swapping to a Getrag or other manual transmission.
Also, unless enamored with one to three side draft carbs, or with the D-jetronic injection, there do exist after market engine control systems that may prove useful, if expensive, in your 164.
Please do your research. Turbobricks may be able to help.
cheers,
B.
