if the tube is good, it might help to add some metal to the inside edge of the brace(where it wont bump out the cover) where the flat steel meets the tube, ie, another few inches of flat steel welded to the exisisting flat and tube. generally when bits fail I repair and reinforce so that I don't have to repair again.
