right door handle clock position 1800 1972

The passenger door handle on my 72 is in a non standard position. It is in the 7 o'clock position. When looking at my drivers door and other 72's, they are located at the 9 o'clock position. I pulled the handle off and the slots only allow two positions, 7 or 12. Is there such a thing as a different passenger door handle? If so, at some time did the PO have to replace it and installed the wrong one? If that is not the case, how does one reorient the slots on the base to reflect the proper position?
