I agree. My 850 has been more trouble-free than my 240 was. It is also a more refined, faster, better handling and more comfortable ride. Gets better gas mileage. Especially on the highway. I've done 30 mpg on the highway with my 850 wagon. The 240 never got more than mid 20's. Also much better in snow and they don't rust..
Downside compared to a 240 is they are a little more difficult to DIY but still very simple compared to any modern car. The parts prices also tend to be a little higher most of the time.
You know, it really depends upon what is important to you. The 240 is pretty simple and the drive train (with maintenance) will last forever. The FWD cars might not be quite as robust, but they are still pretty tough, and with proper care they can also go 300k plus miles like the RWD cars.
Here in New England, good 240, 740 and 940's are also practically non-existent. If you do happen find a good 240 it will be far more expensive than a 740, 940 or 850.
I would also consider an early V70 or S70 through MY 2000. They are essentially an 850. The sweet spot is 1995-1998. Knowledgeable Volvo people will tell you that those model years are some of the best Volvo's ever built.
