As a 6'7" person, I have a very hard time finding a car I can see out of and still be comfortable. The new Volvos, 2001+, have the rearview too far forward and lowered so that at a 4 way stop, I cannot see any traffic on my right.
I just sold a 1996 850 GLT to a friend. It had a clutch and 5 gears, which I loved. The seats are pretty good, but the S70 models have better seat heaters. Mpg on the interstate at 70 got me 29mpg, with the cruise control on.
What ever you buy, do NOT look at a 2001-2002 Volvo. They are all no good, and priced cheap on Craigslist.
The S60 is nice, but there is no room behind the front seats. And the engine compartment is tight.
Since about 1990, Volvos no longer rust as the body panels are all double sided galvanized.
Most of the 850's in the USA that have a clutch were special ordered, so there aren't many of them.
Don't shy away from the maintenance horror stories regarding the FWD cars. Struts are easy to replace, timing belts a bit of a pain but doable, axles are easily replaced every 200K miles or so. The water pumps last 200K.
But the evaporator for the AC is a royal pain as the entire dash has to come out for replacement. But in 2-3 days of DIY, you get to drink a case of beer!
The FWD cars are quite comfortable for us tall people.
