dumb question time for brake fluid in a 240

DOT4 has a slightly higher boiling point than DOT3, but they're compatible. Because of this I've used DOT4 in all my cars even if DOT3 is specified. That's because I used to do lapping and autox. I'd also completely flush the system and replace the fluid once a year. However, this is the boiling point of fresh fluid before it has absorbed any moisture from the atmosphere. In fact, when you buy brake fluid in a plastic container, it's already been absorbing water through the plastic. All this is significant in racing, but if you boil your brake fluid on the street, you need to adjust your driving habits.

Bottom line, If your brake fluid is dangerously low and you only have DOT3 handy to top it up, go right ahead. If you're going out to buy some, get DOT4.
