Sluggish shift from 2 to 1, AW71L 900 1993

My 1993 940 has 335,000 miles original engine and trans. I'm faithful with transmission flushes every 30-50k miles. Lately when decelerating to a stop the trans is very sluggish to shaft back into 1st gear. Sometimes it will shift to first a few seconds after I;ve actually come to a stop. Sometimes it will never even get to first gear and I'll start off in 2nd gear.

When accelerating, the shift from 1st to 2nd is harsh. I recently did a flush and not really much better. Does this have something to do with the worn check balls in the valve body?

Radiator gets replaced every 100k so I'm confident there has never been any water contamination.

thansk for all insight.
MAtt
