Installing the front window aluminum mouding 1800 1972

After painting the car, when the painter reinstalled the front window and its associated aluminum molding, he apparently wasn't familiar with the proper procedure/technique. As a result the soft aluminum molding is bent and dented in several places. I have obtained new replacement molding and before I attempt to install it myself, I would like to know what the proper install procedure is. The molding is so soft, I don't want to make the same mistake. On the surface, it appears that it just sits in a groove in the rubber without clips?
