Bad fuel gage readings 1800 1972

My fuel gage is unreliable. Some times when the tank has just been filled it will read 1/2 and then later it will reflect 3/4? As I drive a long distance it might drop down to 1/3 and then no lower. Should I be looking at having my gas gauge repaired or looking to replace my in tank fuel level sensor?
