The biggest tire you have used? 200

A 205/70/14 tire raises the final drive ratio (taller feel to the ratio of a larger diameter tire) and also contacts the front strut tube and the interior side of the rear wheel well space with even minor cornering.

I think on 15 x 5.5" or 6" wide tires, like the all coveted Virgos (best if made in Norway, not Germany, yet some are better than none), would use a 195/60/15 as the same diameter as the 14 x 5.5" Volvo 240 steelies with 185/70/14.

You could use the 15" steelies from a 700 series or early 900/90 (before the offset change to match FWD Volvo) and have a 15" wheel.

Yet on such roads as you describe, and I'm no tire expert ... you'd want a taller sidewall on a smaller wheel for a more compliant ride.

Problem is 14" tires do not offer much variety, now a days.

In addition, you have other options. The Vovlo 240 HD springs hosted by FCP Groton (I think made by what was called ScanTech, they are now Performance Part Sweden, I guess) to raise the Volvo 240 unibody higher off the ground, for more ground clearance.

You may also want to consider inspecting, diagnosing, and reparaing any shortcomings in the suspension. The Volvo 240 rear axle trailing arm bushes, when they fail, can lower the rear by about 1"-1.5", I think? I'm not sure. Struts mounts (Volvo OEM PN 1272455, Made in GERMANY by Boge), all bushings, ball joints, and may want to replace steering rack wear items.

You could also use those things that install into the spring coils to give lift. Spring braces? I dunno what they are called.

Also, at one time, I think you used to be able to get air shocks for Volvo 240, yet that may have been decades ago, now.

Some may install the rear wagon springs from a 240 wagon for extra beef in the rear.

Like the road conditions you drive on, not unlike Rally and Rally Cross / X-Cross. Independent articulation is what you want. So, don't do heavier stabilizer bars unless you know how do do controlled over steer skids. Well, you'd still have this over steer with heavier springs.

Increasing the distance between the unibody and suspension, through taller springs and air shocks, also changes the rear axle center line offset (left to right).

Others shall chime in with direct experience.

I may to take the 14" Coronas alloy wheels and tires (a craigslist deal or three) for, perhaps, 15" steelies from the Volvo 700/900/ early 90 series. Use 15" 195 / 60 series. For my 1992 240 GL, with rumbly exhaust I never liked. I like the 1992 Volvo 240, though.

Of course.

I’ve got my feet firmly back on east coast soil, but there’s still plenty of our drive to share. We got there far too early to actually try any of the burgers at the Cozy Inn, but we still had to swing by to see this historic gem in the middle of Kansas. (Photo by @penandpalates)
