Thank you all. Smoothness is subjective, and I may not have noticed any roughness without the benefit of my unmodified car idling alongside. For now I will be happy to blame the more objective vacuum gauge behavior on the overlap I am told the B cam has more of.

Also Dan Marino found a loose mounting on the power steering pump. The jiggling pump made the idle look even worse than it was, I think.
