A/C cycling on and off... what to check??? 200 1989

Sages,

Vehicle specifics:
1989 245,
333K miles,
A/C is R12 and still runs cold.

So today on the way home from a 500 mile round trip drive I turned the A/C on and it started cycling on for several seconds and then off for several seconds. I don't have second count on it yet, but will by tomorrow.

I was under the impression that when you turn the A/C knob over into the RED section that the compressor just runs and does not cycle, however, mine does. Is it supposed to do this??? I don't remember mine doing this before, but then again it is now 26 yeas old.

Any thoughts on this?

Thanks in advance,

Matt
