"Pinging still seems to be there."
the knock sensor should detect the pinging -- or knock- and tell the computer to advance the timing of the ignition. Early ignition causes the ping/knock as the spark fires before the piston it a the top of the stroke...causing the piston rod to slam down on the crankshaft....The Ping/Knock.
Carbon build-up can also cause pre-ignition...the reason for the Techron ....Higher Oct gas ignites at a higher compresssion ...that's why high performance engines require it ...87 oct would cause the knock sensor to back off on the "performance" to stop the pinging.
The knock sensor in your LH2.4 system should not allow the engine to Ping. You could find sluggish performance as the timing was altered.
Check the wire to the Knock Sensor.
