940 power steering pump making noise 900 1992

Hi,
I've got a 92 940 that seems to be putting out quite a bit of noise from the power steering pump. I can hear quite a bit of noise from it when listening with a mechanics stethoscope. I removed the belt and the car is much quieter. There seemed to be some play in the shaft if I tried to wiggle it. I put the belt back on and with a higher tension, the noise is down a lot, at least for now. The belt had adequate tension before I loosened it, I thought.

So does it seem likely the pump is going bad? From what I have read here, it sounds like that pump runs on a bushing and not a bearing? Any input would be appreciated. I'm tempted to go ahead and put a rebuilt pump in place and probably do the rack at the same time since it is leaking a little too.

Thanks!
Lyle
