ac vent control 900

the search function in the forum doesn't seem to be working. sorry if I'm posting on something that has already been covered...unable to find the thread.

the vent selector on my 940 non-turbo suddenly stopped working. it feels like there isn't any resistance to the knob, if that makes sense. I'm guessing something failed with the vacuum in the system, but I can't picture how it works on the 940 as I've never had the dash apart. I recall on my old 240 that there was a piece under the hood--a little plastic valve of some sort--that would fail and cause trouble with the AC system, but I haven't found that on the 940.

The AC was working fine, but now in the heat it hardly seems to be effective. I'm guessing that whatever failed also caused the recycled air switch to fail in the open to the outside position. Can anybody help me to interpret these symptoms?

The FAQ on "AC Vents not working" gives some ideas, but without images it is very difficult to tell where to find some of the vacuum lines.

thanks
