240 noisy startup, runs but loses electrical power 200 1993

Greetings all- my '93 240 is acting finicky. It's making a clanging noise at startup that continues after motor starts and stays running. I've been able to turn the motor off, restart and the noise goes away but I wanna take care of the problem. It has been intermittent but getting a little more frequent and did its thing on me multiple times today. Also happens in late afternoon heat and not in the cool of morning (so far).
After motor runs my shift lock light also comes on. I can use the shift lock override to get car in gear and able to drive it but I have no electrical power (radio, blower fan, power windows etc) and also lose shift into overdrive.
Any helpful ideas? ( I replaced alternator maybe 7-8 months ago.) maybe a starter problem?
