93 245 Classic Electric Fan 200

i have a 93 245 Classic with 91,700 miles in excellent running condition. The electric fan in front of the condenser never comes on. My mechanic checked the relay today and in bypassing the 4 plug connector to the positive battery lead triggered the fan to operate. Again, first time I've ever seen it run. We are replacing the relay which I should install tomorrow.

Does anyone know what events cause the fan to run? The Bentley manual has nothing in this. My assumption is that the fan should come on at a certain temperature and when the AC compressor cycles.

Thanks in advance for your comments.

Sam
