Fuel Pump

I have a 1994 940 (and others). I am always afraid of getting into a big project only to discover too late that the problem was much smaller. Like you replace the fuel pump to discover it was only the fuse.

Anyone ever done something like that?

That is in fact my question for this thread.

It seems my fuel pump is not working because the car won't start and I don't smell any fuel. About 3 months ago, I had a similar problem, but after the car sat a couple days it started up and ran OK for a while. I did a 100 mile trip and it was fine. Then a 100 miles return and the car would not start again.

I have read the FAQ on replacing the fuel pump that is located in the tank and I plan to do that job, once I can find the cap to gain access. I have not been able to locate the top of the fuel tank.

However, that's not the point right now. I wonder if there are smaller steps I should be taking first.

I removed the cover to the fuse panel and found there is a white relay marked "fuel pump" I replaced it with one from m 1995 940 (all my 940s are Turbo wagons.). Still nothing working. Is there any other areas I should focus on before starting in on the pump replacement?

I have read some confusing things about, relays under the hood and other symptoms

The basic question is: Should I be checking out other things re: fuel delivery before I get into the pump, itself.
