How much would you pay for a NEW 2017 Volvo 240?

The Caliber has a very poor reliability record...mostly with those secondary nickel and dime items. Engine is...disappointing... but reliable. Manual transmission I have no experience with but since the platform is a modified Neon, they should be reliable.

Consider the Mazda5 or Mazda3 hatch, Lower price would be the Pontiac Vibe/Toyota Matrix. Manual transmissions, hatch, reliable is harder to find in America but they exist.

The holy grail is a low mileage BMW 5-series wagon (not the 540) with a manual. Those are also getting older in the US but worth looking for.

I would love to suggest the VW Golf or Jetta Sportwagen but you really have to comb through them in detail to know which engine, transmission, year, accessory combos are not problematic. For instance an early VR6 with a manual has a transmission made of glass but the engine is stout. A late VR6 with the manual has a great transmission but the engines are problematic. I can say if you pick the 2.0L NA motor and a very basic model (few gadgets) and it is post-imobilizer you will have relatively few problems.
