coil? 444-544

How hot should the coil feel? The other day car was driven about 30 minutes and started to miss and not accelerate. Thought it might be gas problem since the clear in line filter was not full. I took off the gas cap and in general poked around. The car started and after driving 10 minutes or so it seemed to return to normal. When I got back to the garage I looked and filter showed gas but was surprised how warm/hot the coil felt. Since I had not touched it before with a thought about how how it was I have no point of reference.
