Ignition problem? need help 200 1984

The ignition can't prevent the starter from cranking. Since the battery was the only electrical item touched it is logical to recheck it.

I would measure the battery voltage and check the starter circuit. The click suggests the starter is getting connected but is not turning the engine because of a lack of sufficient current.

If smoke is coming from the right side check for a pinched wire, loose ground wire or wrong/bad connection in the wiring there.
