Ignition Timing 700

I put the new distributor in, aligned it close to a mark I had on the old distributor. The engine now starts and runs, but something isn't right, it
sounds like the timing is off and it has now power if I try to drive it. I checked the timing with a timing light and the mark is way off from where it should be ? I don't understand why the timing would be off if the distributor is in the same position ? Originally I thought I had mixed up on of the ignition wires, but I double checked them and they are right. This is a new Richporter distributor, not a Bosch. Any help would be appreciated.
