I see you when you posted and there has not been any responses.
Since we know little and especially the sequence of these events, I will throw some information out here first.

I think we need more information to make a more accurate diagnosis. There are several things that kill an engine. The one you are picking on, is definitely electrical, since you pulled the battery.

There is a small wire that comes off the positive post that will kill the car all by itself.
On some model it has a fuse. I think yours may not.
The wire runs to a junction box on the fender. You may want to slide the cover up and give that whole affair the once over.

Check the fuse panel on the drivers side door hinge.
Remove and clean all the fuses in there as moisture is attracted to the coldness there. After cleaning, spray the whole strip with a quality light filmed corrosion preventive ever couple years. I like LPS 1 or 2. 2 is a little heavier but both work.

Besides a bad CPS sensor, that starts everything working, like spark and fuel. You could have broken the timing belt. It should be changed ever 60,000 miles.

You can pull the distributor cap or the oil filler cap and check to see if anything turns when you crank the engine.

The next most likely item could be a system relay malfunction. It's located under/behind glove box and can be accessed from underneath easier by remover the felt board covering.

Do you know if it's ever been change? There is a date stamp on the white cover. There are posts about repairing them by doing a resolder job. Lots of us carry a spare one for good measure.

Hope this helps get you somewhere.

Phil
