1982 242 HVAC 200 1982

I'm about to replace the factory HVAC with an aftermarket unit from either Vintage Air or Classic Auto Air. My question has to do with the factory fresh air opening in the firewall to the backside of the cowl. Clearly it's designed to mix fresh air with the recirculating air. However, does water also get in through there? I know it's shield from the cowl louvers - if if water did get through, it could drain out through the condensate drain in the bottom of the evaporator housing. But I'll need to block that off for my application --- wondering just how secure the seal has to be for whatever I come up with. If water passes through there after I'm through -- it will leak straight into the footwells. Want to avoid that for obvious reasons.
