Severe surging leading to engine harness replacement

as reading through my Bentley manual and cam across the MAF CO adjustment telling me that test light on always mean rich - light blinking - just right, light off - lean. I did this test, grounded the light and tested to white/blue wire - results were no light. Can this be my surging problem not including my pressure problem. The manual says I should correct all other problems before doing this procedure. Last thing I notice is when I pinch off IAC hose from motor to intake, it runs a lot better. No more surging, idle RPM is where it should be but qucik acceleration causes backfires and exhaust is still rich. Can I have somehow stumbled across my problem with high rpm's and surging????
