Brake booster Ned replacing? 700

It's a 1990 740 gl 4cyl and I just replaced the rear pads
I didn't en up the cap on the master cylinder like I should have so put car in reverse that's fine 2 r 3 times then put it in drive and I herd a noise then my brake pedal starting making a sound like I could hear air.
Yahoo says it's the brake booster well if that's the problem I don't know so I unhooked the vacuum line put a cap on end of it and taped it up and now I got temporary brakes I guess before I replace the brake booster or is it something else.please help.
