I got everything back together today and have the "new" expansion tank in place. Took it out for a ride, then checked the coolant level and watched as the coolant was slowly taken back up by the cooling engine block. Added more coolant and took it out again. This time the coolant had expanded beyond the MAX mark. So it looks like it's all working as planned. Removing the flat cap from the radiator revealed that it was completely full.
