volvo 240 m47 fluid question 200 1992

Hello all

I am a somewhat new member here and was hoping to get some help with an m47 fluid question.

I have looked around on here and have gotten some great info in all aspects of Volvo 240 info, and I know there are some m47 fluid threads already I have read thru, but I was hoping to clarify something

I have a 1992 240 wagon 5 speed with the m47 trans, and not to get too involved with the issues I am having with shifting, ( pretty sure it needs a clutch but trying to determine if I need a trans as well ) .. but I had the fluid drained by a mech I trust, and I wasn't sure what fluid to go with and at his shop he had 2 quarts of Royal Purple 75w90 synthetic gear oil, I did not see the bottles but I had asked him over the phone and I believe it says on the bottle Gl-4 GL-5 approved and will not harm yellow metals etc etc

well basically the fluid changed hasn't helped anything, and actually feels slightly "knotchier" shifting, sooo, Im thinking of draining and changing possibly to the Volvo oem gear oil which I have read about on here and I have access to at a local dealer here in NJ.

so I would like to ask, is the royal purple 75w90 the "wrong" oil ? and should I get it out of there and fill with the Volvo oem ? and if I do that, will I have to do a flush or will it be ok to just drain and fill with the diff Volvo oem oil ? which I believe is a 75w GL-4 synthetic.

any help would be appreciated and thanks in advance
